Leather Coaster

Where you put the glass down is part of the table too. The Leather Coaster is a 3.5" x 3.5" (9 x 9 cm) square cut from a single piece of thick leather, stitched along all four edges, with the embossed Semender crest in the middle. Free name embossing, up to 18 characters.

Leather Coaster Features

One piece, not a laminate
The coaster is a single layer of leather at around 1.5 mm, not two thin pieces glued back to back. Glued coasters separate at the edge after a few wet glasses; there is nothing here to come apart.

Stitched on all four sides
The stitching runs the whole way around. On a coaster that is structural rather than decorative: it is what stops the edges curling upward as the leather dries and rewets over the months.

Square, 3.5 inches
At 3.5" x 3.5" (9 x 9 cm) it takes a whisky glass, a coffee cup or a water glass with room around the base. Square rather than round, because a square sits square to the edge of a table and a round one never quite does.

Free name embossing
Up to 18 characters, free. At this price it is the piece people buy in fours with a name on each one.

Coaster Dimensions and Material

The coaster is brown full-grain leather with the natural grain visible and the crest pressed into the center. It darkens where glasses stand on it, which after a year gives it a ring of its own that is honestly the point.

Full-grain leather: the topmost, densest-fibered layer of the hide, its surface never sanded or thinned. Over the years it darkens rather than wears out, and the small scratches of daily use largely disappear when you rub them with a finger.

What to Know Before Buying

• You receive 1 coaster. For a set, order the quantity you want
• A very hot cup can leave a temporary mark on the leather
• Leather is not waterproof; wipe a sweating glass off it now and then

An honest limit: put a very hot cup straight onto it and the leather can show a mark. It usually fades as it dries, and if one looks like it is staying, a little leather balm takes it out. Leather is also not waterproof: a glass sweating for an hour will leave a damp patch, which dries without harm but is worth wiping. And this is one coaster, not a set of four.

How to Pair the Coaster

Coaster Care

• Wipe it with a dry or barely damp cloth
• Let a damp coaster dry flat at room temperature, never on a radiator
• A little leather balm a few times a year removes water marks and keeps the surface even
• The leather darkens where glasses stand. That is not a flaw, it is patina
