Socks are the last thing anyone thinks about and the first thing that shows when you sit down. Argyle is the pattern of overlapping diamonds with a diagonal line crossing them, and it is not a modern invention. It comes from the tartan of Clan Campbell in Argyll, western Scotland, and moved onto socks and knitwear in the early twentieth century, largely through golf.

What matters for wearing it: argyle reads as traditional rather than loud, even in strong colours, because the eye recognises it as a heritage pattern rather than a graphic. That is why it works under tailoring where a novelty print does not. It is the safest patterned sock to wear to anything formal.

The diagonal overlay is also what makes it forgiving with colour. A three colour argyle picks up whatever is nearest it in an outfit, so one pair works across several combinations rather than matching only one.

Bamboo, Cotton and What Each Does

Bamboo viscose is the reason the bamboo set exists as a separate thing. The fibre is noticeably softer against skin than cotton at the same price, it moves moisture away from the foot faster, and it resists odour better through a long day. In warm weather that combination is the whole argument.

Cotton is more robust, holds a printed or knitted pattern more crisply, and survives more washes before it thins. For patterned socks worn with shoes all day, cotton is the harder wearing choice.

The practical split: bamboo for summer, for long days on your feet, and for anyone who finds cotton socks damp by evening. Cotton for patterns, for cooler months, and for socks you expect to keep for years.

The Gap Between Shoe and Trouser

The one styling rule worth knowing, and it is simpler than it is usually made.

Match the sock to the trouser, not the shoe. A sock that continues the line of the trouser makes the leg look longer and the outfit more considered. A sock that matches the shoe cuts the leg at the ankle.

Pattern is permitted anywhere the trouser is plain. Argyle or stripes under a plain trouser reads as intentional. Under a patterned trouser, it competes.

Length matters more than pattern. A sock that sits too low leaves bare skin when you cross your legs, which undoes everything the pattern was doing. These are cut to stay up through a working day.

Care

Socks are the garment most often ruined by heat, since they go into the hottest wash in the house along with towels.

Wash cool and turn them inside out. Inside out protects the pattern face from abrasion in the drum, which is what fades a printed or knitted design.

Skip the tumble dryer if you can. Heat is what breaks the elastic at the cuff, and a sock that will not stay up is finished regardless of how good the fabric still is.

Wash bamboo separately from towels. Bamboo viscose is softer and picks up lint from heavier cotton items more readily than cotton socks do.
