Paraffin-Free Soy Candle Features
Floral and fruity, not woody
Hillside opens light and fruity, settles into soft floral notes in the middle, and
finishes with a faintly powdery, creamy warmth. It is the spring end of the range. Every other
candle we make is built around sandalwood, so this is the one to pick when you want a room that
smells bright rather than warm.
Wide and low, with several wooden wicks
The vessel is 5.3" (13.5 cm) across and only 2.75" (7 cm) high, which is a
different object from a tall jar: it sits low on a coffee table and lights a wide, shallow pool.
That width is why it carries several wooden wicks instead of one, and why the
scent reaches further than the wax weight alone would suggest. Wooden wicks crackle softly as they
burn.

The glass is frosted and wrapped in a painted scene: a green headland with small white houses and
birds over the water. Lit, the flames sit close to the surface and the whole vessel glows from
above rather than through the sides.
100% soy wax, about 55 hours
The wax is 100% natural soy and the candle is vegan, with no paraffin, which means
no petroleum soot on the wall above it. The full 15.9 oz (450 g) burns for roughly

How to Burn It
- On the first burn, leave it lit until the melted wax reaches the edge, roughly 2 to 3 hours.
On a candle this wide, a short first burn is what leaves a ring of unused wax around the rim for
good
- Trim the wooden wicks to about 1/8" (3 mm) before every burn and snap off the burnt carbon
once cool
- Keep it out of a draft. A wide pool is more sensitive to moving air than a narrow one
- Burn no more than about 4 hours at a stretch, and never leave a lit candle unattended
An honest limit: 55 hours is an approximation, and a wide candle punishes
careless burning more than a narrow one. Skip the long first burn and you will lose a rim of wax
you paid for. Hillside is also the floral one: if you were expecting the woody

Why wooden wicks?
A single cotton wick cannot melt a pool 5.3" across; it would burn straight down and waste most of the wax. Several wooden wicks melt the surface evenly, and they crackle quietly while they burn.
What is tunneling and how do I avoid it?
Tunneling is when the flame burns down the middle and leaves a wall of wax around the edge. It is set on the first burn: if the melted pool does not reach the glass before you blow it out, the candle keeps that smaller circle for the rest of its life. On a wide candle like this one, give the first burn a full 2 to 3 hours.
