Leather and Canvas Tote Bags

A tote is the least complicated bag ever designed: an open box with two handles. What Makes a Tote Work, and Where They Fail

The bottomless bag problem. One large compartment means keys, cables and lip balm migrate to the floor of the bag and stay there. The fix is internal structure: a divider, an interior pocket, or a small pouch you commit to using. Tote Bag Types: Shopper, Structured, Foldable and Bucket

• Classic shopper tote: open top, two handles, wider than it is tall. The everyday workhorse.
• Structured tote: stiffer sides and a flat base so it stands up empty. Reads more formal and protects what is inside.

Tote Bag Sizes and Handle Drops

Handle drop is the vertical gap between the top of the handle and the top of the bag. It decides whether the tote goes over your shoulder or has to be carried in your hand, and it is the single measurement most listings omit.

Will It Go Over Your Shoulder?

Here is the rule that saves a return. A handle drop of about 9 inches or more clears the average upper arm and sits on the shoulder. Below roughly 8 inches, the bag is a hand or forearm carry, no matter how much you want otherwise, and forcing it means the handles dig into your arm.

Applied to this collection: Totebag at 11.8" and LILYBAG at 11" go over a shoulder comfortably, including over a coat. Maybag at 9.1" clears a shoulder in normal clothing but will be tight over heavy winter layers. What Fits: A4, Laptops and Everyday Loads

Documents. A4 and US letter paper need about 12 inches of width to sit flat. Every tote here clears that, so files and notebooks travel without bending corners.

Laptops. All of these are wide enough for a 13 inch machine and most for larger, but none has a padded laptop sleeve. A computer in an open tote sits directly against keys and a water bottle and takes any impact when you put the bag down. Weight, honestly. Canvas bodies keep these bags light, which is exactly why they work as everyday totes. A large full grain leather tote of the same dimensions would weigh noticeably more before you put anything in it.

Canvas or Leather for a Tote

Every tote in this collection is a canvas body with genuine leather handles, trim or flap, and that construction is deliberate rather than a cost saving. Handles take the most abrasion and the most hand contact, so they are leather. The body stays canvas to keep the weight down on a bag that gets filled and carried all day.

One care note specific to this shape: store a tote loosely stuffed and standing rather than hanging by its handles. Hanging a soft bag stretches the handles over months, and that is the part you cannot easily undo.
