A leather bag is one of the few things you buy once and keep using until it looks better than the day it arrived. What separates a good one from a disposable one is rarely the shape. What Makes a Good Leather Bag?

Almost every bag sold as leather is leather in the legal sense. The differences that matter sit underneath that word. Full grain is the outermost layer of the hide, the part with the tightest fiber structure, left unsanded so the natural grain and its small marks stay visible. It is the strongest cut available and the only one that develops a real patina. Top grain has that surface sanded away and a finish sprayed on, which hides flaws and also stops the leather from aging into anything. Genuine leather and bonded leather sit lower still, the second being scraps glued onto a backing.

Construction is the other half. A bag that will be carried daily needs stitching that runs through the leather rather than glue holding a fold in place, reinforcement where the strap meets the body, and hardware that does not corrode against skin and rain. Every bag in this collection is cut and stitched by hand, and the metal parts are chosen so they do not rust or tarnish. Scratches in a full grain surface are not damage, they buff out under a thumb and the rest settle into color.

Types of Leather Bags: Briefcase, Tote, Backpack, Crossbody and Duffel

The names get used loosely across the market, so here is what each type actually does. Some of these are shapes we make, some are neighbors worth knowing about while you decide.

• Messenger: a softer, flap-over cousin of the briefcase, worn across the body, better for cycling and city transit than for a formal office.

Leather Bag Sizes: What Actually Fits in What

Bags photograph larger than they are, and a listing that says "spacious" tells you nothing. The numbers below are measured, and each row names a real model so you have something to hold the dimension against.

Straps matter as much as volume and are easier to get wrong. A 45.3" (115 cm) strap, which is what Lawbag and Mini Lawbag carry, is long enough to wear crossbody over a winter coat. Docbag reaches 47.2" (120 cm) and DAISYBAG 56.3" (143 cm). Anything under about 40" will sit at the hip only.

How to Choose a Leather Bag

Start with the laptop, if there is one. Screen size is the one measurement with no flexibility in it. A 13 inch bag will not take a 16 inch machine no matter how gently you push, and an oversized sleeve lets the computer slide and take impact. Then count the hours. Under two hours of carrying a day, a shoulder bag is comfortable. Past that, or above roughly seven pounds loaded, a backpack is the honest answer even if a briefcase looks better in the meeting.

Then decide how much structure you want. Structured leather holds its shape when empty and protects what is inside, which is why briefcases are cut that way. Soft totes and duffels collapse, pack flat, and expand when you overfill them. Neither is better, they fail in opposite directions.

Finally, colour. Brown leather hides scuffs and warms as it ages, black stays formal and shows less dust, and waxed canvas in olive or sand is the most forgiving of rain and rough handling. If the bag is a gift and you are guessing, brown is the safest answer.

Full Grain Leather vs Waxed Canvas

These two materials solve the same problem from opposite directions, and half of this collection is made from each.

Full grain leather is heavier, more expensive and more formal. It resists abrasion better than any fabric, it can be repaired rather than replaced, and it earns its looks over time as the surface darkens and softens. What it does not love is standing water: leather absorbs, and left soaked and dried by a radiator it stiffens and cracks.

Waxed canvas is a tight cotton weave impregnated with wax. Rain beads off it instead of soaking in, it weighs noticeably less, and it creases and marks where you handle it, which is its version of patina rather than a fault. The wax thins after a few seasons of hard use and is simply reapplied, no specialist required.

An honest limit worth reading before you order: several bags in this collection are canvas bodies with genuine leather flaps, handles and straps, not full leather bags, and we do not describe them that way. How to Care for a Leather Bag

Leather asks for very little and punishes only two things: heat and neglect. Wipe the surface with a dry cloth when it picks up dust, and work a leather balm in two or three times a year, more often in a dry climate. Let a wet bag dry at room temperature and away from any heat source. Store it stuffed loosely with paper so the shape holds, in a cloth bag rather than plastic, since leather needs to breathe.

Waxed canvas is even simpler and has one firm rule: never wash it hot and never put it in a dryer, because heat strips the wax. Cold water, a soft brush for dried mud, and a little mild soap for a stubborn mark. Re-wax the areas that look pale, usually the corners and the strap edges, roughly once a year.
