What a Padded Double Layer Strap Changes

A strap is the cheapest way to change a watch, and the most underrated. The same case looks and feels different on a thin flat strap and on a padded one.

Padding lifts the case. A double layer strap has a second piece of leather beneath the top layer, which raises the watch slightly off the wrist and gives it presence. On a smaller case, this is the difference between a watch that disappears and one that reads as intentional.

Stitching does the structural work. Layered construction means the seam is holding two pieces together along their length rather than folding one over itself, which is why a padded strap holds its shape rather than curling at the edges after a year.

It breaks in rather than wearing out. Full grain leather at the wrist takes skin oil constantly, which is why a strap darkens faster than almost anything else made of leather. Six months in, it looks like it has been yours for years.

One honest note on fit: straps come in specific lug widths, so check the measurement between the lugs of your watch before ordering. That number, not the case diameter, is what determines whether a strap fits.

Care for Watch Leather

Watch straps face something no other leather piece does: constant skin contact and sweat. That combination is what breaks down cheap straps within a season.

Wipe a strap with a dry cloth at the end of a hot day rather than letting moisture sit in the leather overnight. Rotate between two straps if you wear a watch daily, since leather that gets a day to dry lasts several times longer than leather that never does. And do not dry a wet strap on a radiator, which stiffens it permanently.

Rolls need less: keep them out of direct sun, and store them loosely rather than tightly wound when empty. A balm two or three times a year suits both; it is in leather care. Both are covered for life against manufacturing defects, with repairs covered for life as well.
