Two bags with identical dimensions can sit completely differently on the body, and the number that decides it is almost never in the listing. Strap drop, the vertical distance from the top of the strap down to the top of the bag, is what determines whether a bag lands at your ribs, your waist or your hip. It is the reason a bag that looked right online arrives feeling wrong.

What to Look for in a Women's Leather Bag

Weight before capacity. A large bag is only useful if you will still carry it at six in the evening. Full grain leather is heavier than canvas, which is worth it for a bag that will last a decade and no fun at all in a bag you fill with a water bottle and a laptop. Canvas bodies with leather trim exist precisely for this trade.

Strap drop, then strap length. A shoulder bag wants roughly 11 to 12 inches of drop so it clears your arm and sits at the waist. A crossbody wants far more, usually 20 to 24 inches of drop, which means a total strap length in the region of 45 to 56 inches. Shorter handles, in the 3 to 7 inch range, are hand and forearm carries rather than shoulder ones.

Structure. A structured bag keeps its shape empty and protects what is inside. A soft one collapses, packs flat and forgives being overfilled. Neither is better, but a soft bag with a heavy load will sag against your side, and a structured one will not.

The opening. A zip top matters more than people expect on public transport and in crowds. An open tote is faster to use and easier to see into, which is the honest trade.

Types of Women's Bags: Crossbody, Shoulder, Tote and Bucket

The names describe how a bag is carried, not how it looks, which is why they are worth knowing before you shop.

• Crossbody: long adjustable strap worn diagonally, weight spread across the torso, both hands free. The most practical shape for travel and for days on foot. See crossbody and shoulder bags.
• Shoulder bag: shorter strap, sits under the arm at the waist. Reads more polished than a crossbody and is quicker to take on and off.
• Tote: open top, two handles, one large compartment. The work and errands bag. See tote bags.
• Pouch or mini bag: phone, cards and keys only. The piece that replaces pockets rather than a handbag.
• Bucket bag: round-bottomed, drawstring or open top, deep rather than wide. Holds a surprising amount and hides everything at the bottom.
• Hobo: soft crescent shape that slumps against the body. Comfortable, unstructured, hard to keep organized.
• Satchel: structured with a flap and a top handle, more formal than a tote.

Women's Bag Sizes and Strap Drops, Smallest to Largest

Every measurement below is taken from the bag itself. Read it against something you already own rather than against the photograph.

A note on the drops. Anything between 9 and 12 inches is a shoulder carry. The 3 to 7 inch handles on DAISYBAG and Citybag are hand carries, and DAISYBAG compensates with a separate adjustable strap that reaches 56.3" (143 cm), long enough to wear across the body over a coat.

How to Choose by What You Carry Every Day

If it is a phone, a card holder and keys, stay under about 10 inches. Petibag, Slimbag and Moonbag are all in that band, and the reward is a bag you forget you are wearing.

Then check your height against the drop. As a rough guide, a crossbody drop of about 18 inches suits 5'2" and under, 20 inches up to 5'6", and 22 inches or more above 5'8". A drop that is too long puts the bag on your hip bone, where it swings.

Canvas or Leather for an Everyday Bag

Most of this collection is waxed canvas or plain canvas with genuine leather handles, flaps and straps. That construction is deliberate rather than a compromise: it keeps the weight down on bags meant to be carried all day, it handles rain far better than leather does, and the leather parts take the wear where wear actually happens, at the handles and the edges.

Daybag, Faybag and Trabag sit at the leather end. Full grain leather is heavier and costs more, and in return it darkens into patina instead of wearing out, and small scratches rub away under a thumb.

Soft bags lose their shape if stored empty and squashed. Keep one loosely stuffed with paper on a shelf rather than hanging by its strap, which stretches the handles over time.
