Crossbody or Shoulder Bag: What Actually Changes

They are frequently the same bag worn two ways, and the strap is the whole difference.

• Strap length. A shoulder carry wants around 11 to 12 inches of drop, so the bag lands at the waist under your arm. A crossbody wants roughly 20 to 24 inches of drop, which means a total strap length nearer 45 to 56 inches.
• Formality. A shoulder bag reads more polished, a crossbody reads more practical. Neither is wrong, but the strap across the chest is a casual line, which is why some bags come with a removable strap and short handles for exactly this reason.
• Speed. A shoulder bag comes off in one motion. A crossbody has to come over your head, which is slower at a restaurant table and safer on a busy street.

Will Your Phone Fit? Read the Height Column

This is where small bags disappoint people, and it is entirely avoidable. A large modern phone is roughly 6.4 inches tall and 3.1 inches wide. Compare that against the height of the bag, not the width.

Strap Length and How to Wear It

Where a crossbody sits changes how it looks and how it feels, and the right drop depends on your height. As a rough guide, a drop of about 18 inches suits 5'2" and under, 20 inches up to 5'6", and 22 inches or more above 5'8". Too long and the bag lands on the hip bone, where it swings when you walk; too short and it rides up under the arm.

In practice, adjustable is what you want. Slimbag extends to 45.3" (115 cm) and DAISYBAG to 56.3" (143 cm), which is long enough to wear over a winter coat, the situation most straps fail. If you plan to switch between shoulder and crossbody carry through the year, choose one of the detachable or adjustable models rather than a fixed strap.

Leather or Waxed Canvas for a Small Bag

At this size the choice is mostly about how the bag will be treated.
