MagSafe and Phone Wallets in Leather

The phone replaced the wallet for paying and then created a new problem: you still need an ID, and you still need the one or two cards that refuse to live in an app. So the wallet did not disappear, it moved. Either it attaches to the back of the phone, or it grows a pocket and carries the phone itself.

The first is a subtraction, the second an addition. Most people who try both end up owning both and choosing by the day rather than settling on one.

How a MagSafe Wallet Works, and Where Its Limits Are

Card capacity is a hard ceiling. Five slots is five slots, and overfilling a magnetic wallet weakens how flat it sits against the phone.

Which Cards Are Safe Against a Magnet?

This question comes up constantly and the answer is more specific than the rumour.

Chip cards are fine. Modern bank and credit cards carry their data on a chip, and the magnetic stripe on them is high coercivity, meaning it takes a far stronger field than a wallet magnet to affect it. This is why MagSafe wallets became a mainstream product at all.

Low coercivity stripes are the vulnerable ones. That category includes most hotel key cards, transit passes, access badges and older gift cards. Apple gives the same guidance for MagSafe accessories generally: keep those separate from the magnets rather than stacked against them.

In practice: bank cards, driving licence and ID in the magnetic wallet, hotel key in a pocket. It is a small habit and it prevents the one failure people actually experience with this format.

The Two Compared

Capo closes with snap fasteners on both flaps, which is the more secure arrangement when a wallet is carrying a phone as well as cards, and it keeps cash and coins in their own pockets rather than mixed among the cards. Maggy closes with a magnetic flap over the slot mouths and comes in brown and black.

Which One Suits You

Take the MagSafe wallet if you pay by phone almost always, carry an ID and two or three cards, and want the option of leaving with nothing in your pockets. It is also the better answer for running, walking the dog, or any situation where a wallet is one object too many.

Take the phone wallet if you still use cash, want coins to have a home, or prefer everything in one piece you can hold. It suits a bag or a coat pocket rather than trousers, given the 7.5 inch length.

Take neither if your card count is above ten or you want the wallet to be invisible in a pocket. A card holder is thinner and a bifold holds more.

Leather and Care

Both are full grain leather, semi-vegetable tanned, which on a MagSafe wallet matters in a specific way: the piece is on the outside of your phone, so it takes every pocket scuff and hand contact your phone would otherwise take. That is the point of leather here rather than plastic. It marks, then the marks settle into patina rather than staying as scratches.

Card slots on a magnetic wallet loosen slightly with use like any leather slot, which is why five slots holding seven to eight cards is the honest rating rather than a maximum to push. Balm two or three times a year keeps the leather from drying; it is in leather care. Both are covered for life against manufacturing defects, with repairs covered for life as well.
