Almost everyone carries the wrong wallet, and almost always in the same direction: too big. A wallet gets bought for the cards you might carry rather than the ones you do, and then it spends years being sat on, stretching, and putting a rectangle in the back of every pair of trousers you own. The first useful question is not which wallet looks best. It is how many cards you actually use.
This page sorts the range by capacity, from a five card holder up to a sixteen card bifold, and gives the two other numbers that decide the outcome: whether there is a coin pocket, and how thick the leather is. Everything below is measured rather than described.
How Many Cards Do You Actually Carry?
Empty your current wallet onto a table and count. Most people find between six and ten cards they touch in a normal month, plus two or three they have not used in a year. That count is the number to shop against.
Five to seven cards: a card holder. No fold, no cash pocket in most cases, and it disappears in a front pocket. This is the right answer for anyone who pays by phone and carries an ID.
Eight to twelve cards: a compact bifold or a money clip wallet. Enough for a full set of cards plus cash without becoming a brick.
Twelve or more, plus receipts and cash: a full bifold or a zip-around. Real capacity, and the honest trade is thickness.
One thing worth knowing before you buy for capacity: an unlined wallet made from a single layer of leather carries the same cards more slimly than a lined one, because a lining adds two layers of material at every panel. Our leather is full grain calfskin at approximately 1.2 to 1.3 mm, semi-vegetable tanned, and several models are unlined for exactly this reason.
Types of Wallets: Bifold, Card Holder, Money Clip and More
- Bifold wallets: folds once, cards on both inner panels, cash in a full width pocket. The default shape, and the one with the widest capacity range here, from Poler at six cards to Santa at sixteen.
- Card holders: no fold, cards only, sometimes a slim cash slot. The thinnest thing you can carry that still holds an ID.
- Money clip wallets: cards in slots, banknotes held flat under a metal clip rather than folded into a pocket. Cash stays visible and the wallet stays thin.
- Phone and MagSafe wallets: a card holder that attaches magnetically to the back of a phone, or a wallet built to carry a phone alongside cards.
- Travel wallets: taller than a normal wallet because a passport is taller, with slots for boarding passes and multiple currencies.
- Women's wallets: longer format, zipped coin compartments, and capacity for cards, cash and a phone in one piece.
- Trifold: folds twice, so it is shorter and noticeably thicker. Not a shape we make.
- Zip-around: a full perimeter zip that keeps everything in, including receipts and coins. Secure and bulky.
Wallets by Card Capacity, Smallest to Largest
| Model | Cards | Coin pocket | Closed size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maggy | 5 slots, MagSafe | No | 2.6" x 3.7" |
| Neva | 5 to 7 | No | Card holder format |
| Poler | 6 slots plus cash | No | 3.9" x 3.5" (10 x 9 cm) |
| Zeno | 6 to 8 | Yes, zipped, fits keys | Card holder format |
| Vero | 8, plus ID window | No, 20 bills | 4.5" x 3.5" |
| Aziz | 8 to 10, money clip | No, 10 to 12 bills | 4.3" x 3" (11 x 7 cm) |
| Capo | 10, carries a phone | Yes, separate | See product page |
| Soldi | 3 slots, up to 10 cards | No, 50 banknotes unfolded | 4.3" x 3.3" (11 x 8 cm) |
| Palma | 7 slots, 10 to 12 cards | No, up to 30 bills | 3.3" x 3.7" |
| Rocco | 12 to 18, fits a phone | Yes, zipped | 7.7" x 4.2" |
| Santa | 10 slots, 14 to 16 cards | No, up to 30 bills | 4.1" x 3.1" |
Two more sit outside the capacity ladder because they solve a different problem. Afife and the travel wallets are built around a passport rather than a card count, and Marcie and Mini Marcie are the longer women's format with zipped coin compartments.
Do You Carry Coins or Cash?
This is the question that quietly decides which half of the range you are shopping in, and it is worth answering honestly rather than aspirationally.
If you carry coins, choose from Zeno (zipped, holds keys too), Capo (separate coin and cash pockets), Colin, Rocco, Marcie or Mini Marcie. These have a dedicated compartment for them.
If you do not, the slimmer models are open to you. Aziz, Palma, Santa, Vero and Maggy have no coin pocket, and this is deliberate rather than an omission: a coin compartment adds bulk to the one dimension nobody wants it in. Pushing coins into card slots instead will misshape them permanently, so it is worth being realistic here.
If cash is the real problem, the money clip wallets solve it two different ways. Aziz holds 10 to 12 folded bills flat under a stainless steel clip in the centre, so notes never get lost between cards. Soldi takes the opposite route with a wide cash compartment that swallows up to 50 banknotes without folding or cramming them.
Leather, Thickness and What Actually Wears Out
Wallets fail in predictable places: the fold cracks, the card slots stretch and stop gripping, and the stitching at the corners goes. All three are material and construction problems rather than bad luck.
Full grain leather at 1.2 to 1.3 mm is thick enough to hold structure and thin enough to fold without cracking along the spine. Semi-vegetable tanning keeps the leather firm at first, which is why a new wallet grips cards tightly and loosens into shape over the first month. That break-in is normal and it is also why a wallet that feels perfectly loose in the shop will be baggy within a year.
Card slots stretch to fit what you put in them and do not fully return, so a wallet regularly stuffed past its rating will stay stretched. This is the practical case for buying to your real card count rather than your maximum.
Beyond the material, the two things worth checking in this category are what happens after the sale: name debossing is free on every leather wallet here, and everything is covered for life against manufacturing defects, with repairs covered for life as well. Balm two or three times a year keeps the fold supple; it is in leather care.
Personalized Wallets and Gifts
A wallet is the most reliable leather gift there is. There is no sizing to guess, no style commitment, and the recipient uses it every single day. Name debossing is free and pressed into the leather rather than printed on the surface, so it ages at the same rate as the wallet around it.
Unlike bags, wallets fit comfortably inside the wooden gift box, which can be added separately if you want the unboxing to be part of it. Every order ships with a dust bag and a hand written card as standard.
If you are choosing for someone else, err toward the middle of the capacity range rather than the largest: a ten card wallet suits far more people than a sixteen card one. One caution: a piece stamped with a name cannot be returned for a change of mind, so settle on the model first. A wallet also pairs naturally with a bag in the same tannage, and the two age together; the full range is in leather bags.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many cards should a wallet hold?
Count the cards you actually use in a month, which for most people is six to ten, and shop to that number rather than your maximum. Card slots stretch to fit what you put in them and do not fully recover, so a wallet consistently overfilled will stay loose.
Which wallets have a coin pocket?
Zeno, Capo, Colin, Rocco, Marcie and Mini Marcie all have a dedicated coin compartment, most of them zipped. Aziz, Palma, Santa, Vero and Maggy do not, which is what keeps them slim. Pushing coins into card slots will misshape them permanently.
What is the difference between a bifold and a card holder?
A bifold folds once, carries cards on both inner panels and has a full width cash pocket, so it holds more and sits thicker. A card holder does not fold: it carries cards only, sometimes with a slim cash slot, and is the thinnest option that still holds an ID.
Why is an unlined wallet slimmer than a lined one?
A lining adds two extra layers of material at every panel, so the same cards sit noticeably thicker in a lined wallet. Single layer full grain leather at around 1.2 to 1.3 mm holds its structure without that bulk, which is why several models here are built unlined.
Will a new wallet feel too tight?
Usually, and it should. Semi-vegetable tanned leather starts firm and grips cards closely, then loosens into shape over roughly the first month of use. A wallet that already feels loose when new will be noticeably baggy within a year, so a snug start is the better sign.
Can a wallet be personalized, and does it fit the gift box?
Yes to both. Name debossing is free on leather wallets, up to the character limit shown on each product page, and pressed into the leather rather than printed on it. Wallets fit inside the wooden gift box, which is a separate item that can be added to your order.
