A shirt is decided by two things before pattern ever enters the conversation: what it is made of and how heavy it is. A 100% cotton plaid in July and a heavyweight flannel in January are the same garment shape doing completely different jobs, and buying the wrong weight is the most common way a shirt ends up unworn.

Seven shirts here, running from a lightweight summer plaid to a heavyweight winter flannel. Below: the fabric content of each, what the cotton blends actually do, and one honest note about the linen shirt.

Weight First, Then Pattern

Lightweight, for heat. The Lightweight Cotton Plaid is 100% cotton and cut light enough to wear open over a t-shirt in summer without carrying heat.

Mid weight, for most of the year. The fine-woven shirts and the houndstooth sit here. These are the office and dinner shirts, worn buttoned and tucked or open over a tee.

Heavyweight, for cold. The Heavyweight Striped Cotton Flannel at 95% cotton is a winter garment that works as a light jacket in autumn and a layer under one in January.

And one that is a layer rather than a shirt. The Oversize Corduroy Shirt is cut to go over a t-shirt rather than to be worn fitted, which is why it carries an oversize label rather than a size.

The Seven, by Fabric

Shirts by fabric content, weight and pattern
Shirt Fabric Weight Colours
Lightweight Cotton Plaid 100% cotton Light, summer Brown, khaki green, navy
Heavyweight Striped Flannel 95% cotton Heavy, winter Orange, khaki green, navy, brown
Houndstooth 70% cotton, 25% polyester Mid Green, beige, brown
Self-Striped Fine-Woven 70% cotton, 25% polyester Mid Ecru, brown, navy, green
Fine-Woven Striped 70% cotton blend Mid White, gray, light green
Linen Shirt Linen-look weave, see below Light to mid Beige, khaki green, black, navy
Oversize Corduroy Corduroy Mid to heavy, a layer Brown, blue, green

All seven run S to XL in US sizing, all regular fit except the corduroy, which is cut oversize.

What the Cotton Blends Actually Do

Three of these shirts are around 70% cotton with 25% polyester, and that is worth explaining rather than glossing over, because blends have a reputation they only half deserve.

What the polyester does: it holds the weave stable, so the shirt creases far less through a day and comes out of a wash closer to ready. It also keeps the shape of a collar and a cuff over more washes than pure cotton manages.

What it costs: a blend breathes less than 100% cotton in real heat, and it does not develop the soft broken-in feel that pure cotton gets after a year.

The practical division: if the shirt is going to a desk, a meeting or a dinner and you want it to look pressed at 6pm, the blend is doing you a favour. If it is going to be worn in August heat or you want the fabric to soften over years, take the 100% cotton plaid or the 95% cotton flannel.

Neither is better in the abstract. They fail in opposite directions, and knowing which direction matters to you is the whole decision.

The Linen Shirt Is a Linen-Look Weave

Stated plainly because the name does not: the Men's Linen Shirt is woven to look and drape like linen rather than being made from linen fibre.

That is a real difference and it cuts both ways. It creases dramatically less than pure linen, which is the single most common complaint people have about linen shirts, and it holds colour better over a summer of washing. What it does not do is breathe the way true linen breathes in genuine heat, or develop that particular softened, slightly rumpled character that linen owners tend to love.

Buy it for the drape and the look, and for a summer shirt that survives a day out of a suitcase. Do not buy it expecting pure linen, because it is not, and we would rather say that here than let it arrive as a surprise.

Patterns and When They Work

Houndstooth reads plain from across a room and shows its structure up close, which is exactly why it works at a desk. The small dense check does the job of a pattern without announcing itself.

Self-stripe is woven into the fabric rather than printed on it, so the stripe appears only in certain light. This is the quietest pattern here and the most useful if you want texture without visible pattern.

Fine-woven stripe is the visible version, classic and straightforward, and the most conventionally smart of the seven.

Plaid and flannel stripe are the casual end, made to be worn open over a t-shirt rather than buttoned to the collar.

Corduroy is not a pattern but a texture, and its ribbed surface reads as warmth even before you touch it, which is why it works as an autumn layer.

Fit, Sizing and Care

Six of the seven are regular fit, following the body without being close, in US sizes S to XL. The corduroy is oversize by design: take your normal size for the intended look, since sizing down defeats the cut.

On care, the fabrics diverge. The 100% and 95% cotton shirts soften with every wash, and that improvement is the reason to buy them; wash them normally and expect them to get better. The blends hold their finish and need less pressing but should be washed cooler, since heat is what makes polyester content go shiny at the collar and cuffs.

Hang shirts rather than folding them, which is the opposite of the rule for knitwear and knit t-shirts. Woven fabric keeps its shape on a hanger; knit does not.

Everything here is covered for life against manufacturing defects, and repairs are covered for life as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the linen shirt made from real linen?

No, it is a linen-look weave: woven to drape and look like linen rather than made from linen fibre. It creases far less than pure linen and holds colour better, but it does not breathe the same way in genuine heat. Buy it for the drape rather than the fibre.

Which shirts are 100% cotton?

The Lightweight Cotton Plaid is 100% cotton and the Heavyweight Striped Flannel is 95%. The houndstooth and the two fine-woven shirts are around 70% cotton with 25% polyester, which creases less and holds its collar shape through more washes.

Why choose a cotton blend over pure cotton?

Polyester content stabilises the weave, so the shirt creases far less through a day and keeps its collar and cuff shape over more washes. The cost is that it breathes less in real heat and never develops the soft broken-in feel that pure cotton gets over a year.

What size is the oversize corduroy shirt?

Take your normal size. Oversize here is a cut rather than a size, designed to be worn as a layer over a t-shirt. Sizing down to make it fit closely defeats the point of the design, which is the relaxed shoulder and roomy body.

Which shirt works for summer?

The Lightweight Cotton Plaid at 100% cotton, cut light enough to wear open over a t-shirt without carrying heat. The linen-look shirt is the other summer option, and it has the advantage of creasing far less than a true linen shirt would.

Should shirts be hung or folded?

Hung. Woven fabric keeps its shape on a hanger, unlike knitwear and knit t-shirts, which stretch at the shoulders when hung and should be folded instead. Wash the blends cooler, since heat makes polyester content go shiny at collars and cuffs.
