Two bags with identical dimensions can sit completely differently on the body, and the number that decides it is almost never in the listing. Strap drop, the vertical distance from the top of the strap down to the top of the bag, is what determines whether a bag lands at your ribs, your waist or your hip. It is the reason a bag that looked right online arrives feeling wrong.

This page gives every measurement we have: dimensions from a 9.3 inch pouch up to an 18.9 inch tote, strap drops where they apply, and what each size realistically holds. It also covers the difference between canvas and leather for a bag carried every day, and how to keep either one in shape.

What to Look for in a Women's Leather Bag

Weight before capacity. A large bag is only useful if you will still carry it at six in the evening. Full grain leather is heavier than canvas, which is worth it for a bag that will last a decade and no fun at all in a bag you fill with a water bottle and a laptop. Canvas bodies with leather trim exist precisely for this trade.

Strap drop, then strap length. A shoulder bag wants roughly 11 to 12 inches of drop so it clears your arm and sits at the waist. A crossbody wants far more, usually 20 to 24 inches of drop, which means a total strap length in the region of 45 to 56 inches. Shorter handles, in the 3 to 7 inch range, are hand and forearm carries rather than shoulder ones.

Structure. A structured bag keeps its shape empty and protects what is inside. A soft one collapses, packs flat and forgives being overfilled. Neither is better, but a soft bag with a heavy load will sag against your side, and a structured one will not.

The opening. A zip top matters more than people expect on public transport and in crowds. An open tote is faster to use and easier to see into, which is the honest trade.

Types of Women's Bags: Crossbody, Shoulder, Tote and Bucket

The names describe how a bag is carried, not how it looks, which is why they are worth knowing before you shop.

  • Crossbody: long adjustable strap worn diagonally, weight spread across the torso, both hands free. The most practical shape for travel and for days on foot. See crossbody and shoulder bags.
  • Shoulder bag: shorter strap, sits under the arm at the waist. Reads more polished than a crossbody and is quicker to take on and off.
  • Tote: open top, two handles, one large compartment. The work and errands bag. See tote bags.
  • Pouch or mini bag: phone, cards and keys only. The piece that replaces pockets rather than a handbag.
  • Bucket bag: round-bottomed, drawstring or open top, deep rather than wide. Holds a surprising amount and hides everything at the bottom.
  • Hobo: soft crescent shape that slumps against the body. Comfortable, unstructured, hard to keep organized.
  • Satchel: structured with a flap and a top handle, more formal than a tote.
  • Backpack: both shoulders, and the right answer for anyone carrying a laptop daily. Daybag is the leather one here, with a padded laptop section.

Women's Bag Sizes and Strap Drops, Smallest to Largest

Every measurement below is taken from the bag itself. Read it against something you already own rather than against the photograph.

Women's bags by size, with strap drop and realistic capacity
Model Dimensions Strap or handle Holds
Petibag 9.3" x 6.1" x 1.6" Crossbody strap Phone, cards, keys
Slimbag 9.4" x 8.3" x 1.2" Adjusts to 45.3" (115 cm) Phone and a slim wallet
Moonbag 10.2" x 6.3" x 2" (26 x 16 x 5 cm) Crossbody strap Phone, wallet, keys
DAISYBAG 9.8" x 8.7" x 4.7" 3.1" handle, strap to 56.3" (143 cm) Everyday essentials, worn crossbody or in hand
Monabag 11.8" x 9.4" 9.8" drop Daily carry, shoulder
Faybag 13.8" x 9.4" x 2.8" (35 x 24 x 7 cm) Shoulder Slim profile, daily volume
Totebag 13.8" x 12.6" x 4.7" 11.8" drop, 31.5" total Work and errands, snap closure
LILYBAG 13.8" x 11.8" x 4.7" 11" drop Tote capacity, canvas and leather
Maybag 14.6" x 10.6" x 3.5" 9.1" drop Wide and shallow, shoulder carry
Citybag 17.3" x 14.2" x 4.7" 7.1" drop, hand or forearm Large tote, files and a notebook
Trabag 18.9" x 13.8" x 4.7" Shoulder The largest here, with a magnetic inner divider

A note on the drops. Anything between 9 and 12 inches is a shoulder carry. The 3 to 7 inch handles on DAISYBAG and Citybag are hand carries, and DAISYBAG compensates with a separate adjustable strap that reaches 56.3" (143 cm), long enough to wear across the body over a coat.

How to Choose by What You Carry Every Day

If it is a phone, a card holder and keys, stay under about 10 inches. Petibag, Slimbag and Moonbag are all in that band, and the reward is a bag you forget you are wearing.

If a full wallet, sunglasses and a small water bottle come too, you want depth rather than width. DAISYBAG at 4.7" deep holds more than its 9.8" width suggests, which is a large part of why it is the most popular bag we make.

If a notebook or folder travels with you, you need 13 inches of width minimum for A4 and US letter to sit flat. Totebag, LILYBAG, Maybag, Citybag and Trabag all clear that.

If a laptop is in the picture, choose the backpack rather than a tote. Daybag has a padded laptop section; the totes here do not, and a laptop loose in an open tote takes every impact directly.

Then check your height against the drop. As a rough guide, a crossbody drop of about 18 inches suits 5'2" and under, 20 inches up to 5'6", and 22 inches or more above 5'8". A drop that is too long puts the bag on your hip bone, where it swings.

Canvas or Leather for an Everyday Bag

Most of this collection is waxed canvas or plain canvas with genuine leather handles, flaps and straps. That construction is deliberate rather than a compromise: it keeps the weight down on bags meant to be carried all day, it handles rain far better than leather does, and the leather parts take the wear where wear actually happens, at the handles and the edges.

Daybag, Faybag and Trabag sit at the leather end. Full grain leather is heavier and costs more, and in return it darkens into patina instead of wearing out, and small scratches rub away under a thumb.

An honest limit worth knowing: LILYBAG, Maybag, Citybag, DAISYBAG, Honeybag, Miabag, Frenchbag and Hamperbag are canvas bodies with leather details, not full leather bags, and we do not describe them as leather. Every product page states the construction.

Soft bags lose their shape if stored empty and squashed. Keep one loosely stuffed with paper on a shelf rather than hanging by its strap, which stretches the handles over time. Leather balm two or three times a year is in leather care. Everything here is covered for life against manufacturing defects, and repairs are covered for life as well.

Personalized Women's Bags and Gifts

Name debossing is free on leather pieces and pressed into the surface rather than printed on, so it ages at the same rate as the bag. Every order ships with a dust bag and a hand written card as standard.

If you are buying for someone else, size is the thing most likely to go wrong, and the small bags are the safest guess: a pouch or a compact crossbody suits nearly everyone, while a large tote is a personal choice about how much someone wants to carry. A leather wallet is the version of this gift with no sizing at all. One caution: a piece stamped with a name cannot be returned for a change of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is strap drop and what length do I need?

Strap drop is the vertical distance from the top of the strap to the top of the bag, and it decides where the bag sits on your body. Roughly 11 to 12 inches is a shoulder carry at the waist. A crossbody needs about 20 to 24 inches of drop, which is a total strap length near 45 to 56 inches.

What size handbag works best for everyday use?

Under 10 inches wide if you carry a phone, cards and keys. Around 13 to 14 inches if a notebook, a folder or A4 paper travels with you, since anything narrower makes documents bend. Depth matters as much as width: a 4.7 inch gusset holds far more than a slim bag of the same face size.

Do any of these bags fit a laptop?

Daybag is the one built for it, with a padded laptop section inside a leather body. The totes in this collection are wide enough for a laptop but have no padded sleeve, so a computer would sit against the other contents and take impacts directly. For daily laptop carry, choose the backpack.

Is a canvas bag durable enough for daily use?

Yes, and waxed canvas handles rain better than leather while weighing noticeably less. It creases and marks where you handle it, which is the material behaving normally rather than a fault. When the finish thins at the corners after a few seasons, it is renewed with more wax.

How do I stop a soft bag from losing its shape?

Store it loosely stuffed with paper or a cloth so the body holds its form, standing on a shelf rather than hanging from its strap. Hanging stretches handles over time, and storing it squashed under other bags sets creases that are difficult to reverse. Keep it in a dust bag, not plastic.

Can a bag be personalized with a name?

Yes, on leather pieces, free of charge and up to the character limit shown on each product page. The name is debossed into the leather rather than printed on the surface, so it wears at the same rate as the bag. Personalized pieces cannot be returned for a change of mind.
