Waxed canvas was invented to keep sailors dry, which tells you most of what you need to know about it. Cotton is woven tight, then impregnated with a paraffin or beeswax blend until water stops soaking in and starts beading on the surface. The result weighs less than leather, costs less than leather, handles rain better than leather, and looks worse than leather for about a month before it starts looking considerably better.

This page explains what waxed canvas actually is, how it differs from the plain cotton canvas used in lighter summer bags, how to clean and re-wax it so it lasts decades, and which bags in this collection are which. Two materials sit side by side here and the difference matters, so it is spelled out rather than blurred.

What Is Waxed Canvas?

Waxed canvas is cotton duck fabric that has been saturated with wax under heat so the coating sits between and around the fibers rather than on top of them. That construction gives it three properties nothing else combines.

It repels water without being sealed. Rain beads and rolls off, but the fabric still breathes, so a bag does not turn clammy inside the way a coated nylon one does.

It records use. The wax creases and lightens where you fold, grip and lean on it. Those pale lines are the canvas equivalent of patina, and they are the reason a five year old waxed bag looks like it belongs to someone rather than like it failed.

It is renewable. When the finish thins, usually at corners, strap edges and the base, you rub in more wax and it comes back. No specialist, no workshop, no replacement.

The trade is that it is not leather. It does not have leather's abrasion resistance or its formality, which is why nearly every bag here pairs a canvas body with full grain leather at the handles, flaps and straps, the places that take the most contact.

Waxed Canvas, Cotton Canvas and Leather Compared

Three materials, three different jobs. Choose by what your bag has to survive.

Material comparison for everyday bags
Property Waxed canvas Cotton canvas Full grain leather
Water Repels, beads off Absorbs, dries fast Absorbs, needs drying care
Weight Medium Lightest Heaviest
How it ages Creases pale, softens Softens, may fade Darkens into patina
Upkeep Re-wax about once a year Spot clean, cold water Balm two or three times a year
Best for Commuting, travel, weather Summer, beach, market, light loads Work bags and anything formal

Which Bags Are Waxed and Which Are Plain Canvas

Both fabrics live in this collection and they are not interchangeable. The waxed ones handle rain and hold structure; the plain cotton ones are lighter and made for warm weather. Every bag below has leather handles, trim or straps.

Is Waxed Canvas Waterproof?

No, and any listing that says otherwise is overselling it. Waxed canvas is water resistant. Rain beads and runs off the surface, which covers a downpour on the way to the car or an hour walking through weather, and the fabric dries quickly afterwards. What it is not is sealed: the seams are stitched rather than taped, and the zips are not gasketed, so a bag left submerged or standing in a puddle will let water in eventually.

The practical version: your laptop is fine in a shower, and you should not treat the bag as a dry bag on a boat. Plain cotton canvas offers less again, absorbing water and then drying out, which is why the lighter summer bags in this collection are better suited to beaches and markets than to a rainy commute.

How to Care for a Waxed Canvas Bag

Cleaning. Cold water and a soft brush. Let mud dry completely and brush it off rather than attacking it wet. A little mild soap handles a stubborn mark, but nothing more aggressive.

Never use heat. No washing machine, no hot water, no tumble dryer, no radiator. Heat melts the wax out of the weave and the fabric loses the property you paid for. This is the single mistake that ruins waxed canvas.

Re-waxing. Roughly once a year, or whenever an area goes pale and stops beading water. Warm the fabric slightly, rub wax in with a cloth in small circles, then let it settle overnight. Corners, the base and the strap edges wear first and often only they need doing.

The leather parts. Handles, flaps and straps want a leather balm two or three times a year, the same as any leather piece. Both balms are in leather care.

Storage. Loosely stuffed on a shelf, not squashed and not hanging by the strap, which stretches handles over time. A cloth dust bag rather than plastic, since wax and sealed plastic do not get along in a warm cupboard.

How to Choose a Canvas Bag

Start with the weather you actually walk in. If your commute involves rain more than a few times a month, take waxed. If your bag is for summer, holidays and dry days, plain cotton canvas is lighter and cheaper and does the job.

Then the load. Canvas bodies handle weight well but soft bags sag against the side when overfilled. If a laptop travels daily, choose one with a dedicated compartment: Sandbag and BIGBAG are the backpacks, Briefbag the work bag for machines up to 13".

Then colour, with one warning. Waxed canvas darkens slightly when the wax is fresh and lightens along creases as it ages, so the bag will not stay the exact shade in the photograph. Olive, sand and tobacco handle this gracefully. Very pale cotton canvas shows marks, which is the honest cost of a light summer bag.

If you would rather have leather throughout, the full leather range sits in leather bags, and the work bags built around screen sizes are in laptop and work bags.

Personalized Canvas Bags and Gifts

Name debossing is free and pressed into the leather parts of the bag, the handle tab or the flap, rather than onto the canvas itself. It ages at the same rate as the leather around it. Every order ships with a dust bag and a hand written card as standard.

Canvas bags travel well as gifts because they are forgiving: lighter than leather, less formal, and not tied to a wardrobe. A tote or a small crossbody suits almost anyone. One caution: a piece stamped with a name cannot be returned for a change of mind. Everything here is covered for life against manufacturing defects, and repairs are covered for life as well.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is waxed canvas waterproof?

It is water resistant rather than waterproof. Rain beads and rolls off the surface, which handles a downpour or a wet commute comfortably, but seams are stitched and zips are not sealed, so a submerged bag will eventually let water through. The finish is renewed by reapplying wax.

How often should I re-wax a canvas bag?

About once a year with regular use, or whenever an area looks pale and stops repelling water. Corners, the base and strap edges wear first and can be treated on their own. Warm the fabric slightly, rub wax in with a cloth, then leave it overnight to settle.

Can I wash a waxed canvas bag?

Not in a machine and never in hot water. Heat melts wax out of the weave and permanently removes the water resistance. Use cold water and a soft brush, let mud dry before brushing it off, and add a little mild soap only for stubborn marks. Never tumble dry.

What is the difference between waxed canvas and plain cotton canvas?

Waxed canvas is cotton saturated with wax, so it repels water, holds more structure and creases pale where it is handled. Plain cotton canvas has no coating: it is lighter and cheaper, absorbs water and dries out, and suits summer and light loads rather than weather.

Are the creases and marks a defect?

No, they are how the material works. Wax lightens where the fabric folds or takes pressure, producing pale lines at corners and along handles. This is the canvas version of patina and it deepens the look over time. Rubbing the area warm with your hand softens a mark you dislike.

Do canvas bags have leather parts?

Yes. Every bag in this collection pairs a canvas body with genuine leather at the handles, flaps or straps, the points that take the most contact and abrasion. This is why they are described as canvas and leather bags rather than as full leather, which they are not.
