Which Group Suits Which Person

Desk, Paper and Getting the Notebook Format Right

This is where returns happen in this category, and it is entirely avoidable. Notebooks and organizers look similar in photographs and behave completely differently in the hand.

Gilded Leather Notebook opens from the top, like a reporter's pad or a steno pad, not sideways like a book. If you want a conventional book format, this is not it, and if you take notes standing up it is exactly it.

A5 Leather Journal is a traveler's notebook, meaning a leather cover with an elastic that holds inserts you replace as they fill. The leather is permanent, the paper is not, which is the whole idea.

The A5 Organiser is a folio, a portfolio cover with no paper inside it. You supply your own notebook. Bought expecting a notebook, it disappoints; bought as a folio, it outlives every notebook you put in it.

Full grain leather develops patina through contact and oil from your hands, so small pieces reach the colour and softness that people buy leather for years before larger ones do.

It also means small pieces show mistakes faster. A coated or corrected grain accessory looks the same on day 400 as day one and then cracks at a fold; full grain darkens and rounds instead. On something touched this often, the grade of the leather is the entire difference.

The practical upshot: these are the pieces most worth buying in good leather, and the ones that most reward a balm two or three times a year. Both the balm and the cleaning brush are in leather care. What Is Not Leather Here

Two honest notes, because this collection is not uniformly leather and we would rather say so than let you discover it.

The candles are not leather. They are soy candles and we do not make them; they are here because they belong in a gift, not because they carry any of the workshop's craft story. If you want them, they are in candles.

Zippo Fuel is fuel. It sits in the smoking group as a practical companion to the wrapped lighter, nothing more.

One further format note: the leather wrapped enamel mug is espresso sized rather than a full coffee mug. It is a ritual object, and knowing that before it arrives is the difference between delight and disappointment.

Small Leather Gifts

This is the strongest gift category in the catalog, for a reason that has nothing to do with the leather: there is no size to get wrong. A pencase, a keychain, a coaster set or a watch roll suits the recipient regardless of what they wear or how much they carry.

Name debossing is free on leather pieces and pressed into the surface rather than printed on it, so it ages with the object.
