Sandalwood in a tall lidded tin with a red barn on it. The Farmhouse Design soy candle holds 7.8 oz (220 g) of paraffin-free soy wax, burns for roughly 40 hours on a single wooden wick, and closes with a lid so the scent is still there the next time you open it.
Paraffin-Free Soy Candle Features
A lidded tin, not a glass jar
The candle sits in a tin with a lid rather than glass. The lid keeps dust
off the wax, holds the sandalwood in between burns, and makes this the candle you can put in a bag
for a weekend without wrapping it in a jumper first.
A single wooden wick that crackles
There is one wooden wick, which suits a candle this size: the melt pool is narrow
enough for one flame to reach the edge. A wooden wick burns with a low crackle, closer to a
fireplace than to a candle, and it does not mushroom and smoke the way a cotton wick does when it
needs trimming.
Sandalwood, and nothing shouting
The scent is sandalwood: dry, warm and woody rather than sweet. At 7.8 oz (220 g)
it is sized for a bedroom, a study or a bathroom, where it scents the room without taking it
over.
About 40 hours
The 7.8 oz (220 g) of soy wax burns for roughly 40 hours. It is also
100% organic soy wax and vegan: no paraffin, so no petroleum soot marking the wall
above it.
Candle Size, Scent and Vessel
The Farmhouse Design tin is the taller, narrower one of the pair, wrapped in an illustrated red barn under a pale sky, with a small round label on the lid. Inside, plain cream wax and a single wooden wick.

How to Burn It
- On the first burn, leave it lit until the melted wax reaches the edge of the tin, roughly 2 hours. A soy candle keeps the shape of its first pool, and a short first burn is what causes tunneling
- Trim the wooden wick to about 1/8" (3 mm) before every burn and snap the burnt carbon off once it is cool
- Put the lid back on when it is cold. That is what keeps dust out of the wax and holds the scent in between burns
- Keep it out of a draft, burn no more than about 4 hours at a stretch, and never leave a lit candle unattended
An honest limit: 40 hours is an approximation. Burn it in a draft or skip trimming the wick and it goes faster. At 7.8 oz (220 g) it is a small to medium room candle: for a living room, or an open plan space, the 15.9 oz candles with multiple wicks are the ones that actually fill the air. The tin also gets hot to the touch while it is burning, more so than glass, so it wants a coaster or a hard surface rather than a wooden shelf. The Home Design candle is the same wax, same size and same sandalwood in a wider tin with different artwork, so owning both means one scent in two tins.
How to Pair It
- The same candle, different artwork: Home Design is the same sandalwood in a wider tin with a workshop scene.
- For a bigger room: the 15.9 oz Wick and Shoreline candles have multiple wicks and burn about 55 hours.
- Smaller still: the Semender Mini Soy Candle is 3.2 oz, for a bathroom shelf or a desk.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it burn?
Around 40 hours for the full 7.8 oz (220 g). That assumes a trimmed wick and no draft, both of which change the number. Lit for a couple of hours in the evening, it lasts a few weeks.
What does it smell like?
Sandalwood: dry, warm and woody, closer to a room than to a perfume. It is not sweet and not floral. If you want floral and fruity instead, the Hillside Design candle is the other direction in the range.
How is this different from the Home Design candle?
The tin and the illustration, and nothing else. Farmhouse is the taller tin with a red barn; Home Design is the wider, lower tin with a workshop scene. Same wax, same 7.8 oz, same single wooden wick, same sandalwood, same burn time.
Why a wooden wick?
Two reasons. It suits the width of this candle, where one flame can melt the pool all the way to the edge, and it burns with a soft crackle rather than silently. Wooden wicks also do not mushroom and smoke the way an untrimmed cotton wick will.
Does the tin get hot?
Yes, more than glass does. Metal carries the heat of the flame outward, so put it on a coaster, a stone or a plate rather than straight onto a wooden table or a shelf you care about.
Can I use the tin afterwards?
Once the wax is gone, warm water and a little dish soap clean out the residue and the tin becomes a small lidded container. That is the practical advantage of a tin over glass: it has a lid and it will not break if it goes in a bag.
It smells like sandalwood and looks like a barn on a shelf, and both of those are the point.
How can I track my order?
When your order ships, we email you a shipping confirmation with your tracking number and a tracking link. You also get an email at every stage until it reaches you. You can check the status any time on our Track My Order page, or under your account if you signed in when you ordered.
These emails go automatically to the email address entered with the order, and we can't stop them for a single order. If you are sending a gift and want to keep the surprise, enter your own email address and phone number at checkout.
When will my order ship, and when will it arrive?
Each piece is prepared after you order: your order is prepared and shipped within 5-7 business days, and once it ships it is usually delivered within 2-3 business days. The dates for your order are shown on the product page before you buy. Weekends and public holidays are not counted.
Orders ship with UPS, FedEx or DHL. We email your tracking number on the day your order ships. A parcel doesn't always leave the carrier's facility right away, so the tracking may take a little while to show movement; please check again later.
How much is shipping?
The shipping cost for your order is shown at checkout before you pay, and most orders ship free. There are no extra shipping charges after you pay.
Do you accept returns and cancellations?
Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to request a return of a piece without personalization; it must come back unused, in its original condition and packaging. Pieces stamped with a name are made for one person, so as stated in our Refund Policy they can't be canceled, returned or exchanged. To start a return or a cancellation, write to us at contact@semender.info or through our contact page.
How do I personalize my order?
On the product page, type the name you want in the "Add the name you want stamped (optional)" box below the color options. Name stamping is free. The limit is 5 to 18 characters depending on the piece, spaces included, and the counter in the box shows each piece's limit.
All letters A to Z, the numbers 0-9, ❤ and the marks ( ) . - & @ / can be stamped; other marks and emoji can't. Logos are stamped only on corporate bulk orders. Names are stamped in capital letters, 6 mm (about 1/4 in) tall. Personalized pieces can't be canceled, returned or exchanged.
For the full details, see our Personalization Guide.
Is your leather real?
Yes. Our leather pieces are made from full-grain calfskin, semi-vegetable tanned. On our waxed canvas models, leather is used together with waxed canvas. The leather darkens and gains character as you use it.
What the labels on leather actually mean is explained in Full-Grain, Top-Grain and Genuine Leather.
My order is a gift. What should I do?
Write your message in the order note on the cart page and we add it to your order. To make the gift extra special, add a wooden gift box from the product page, choose one of our ready-made gift sets, or put several pieces together on Build Your Own Gift Set.
How do I care for leather, and how often?
Leather is a natural material: every piece can carry different tones and marks, it darkens as you use it, and it can scratch in everyday use. These scratches, and marks left by water, can be treated with our Leather Balm.
To use the balm, first wipe the piece with a damp cloth and let it dry completely. Take a small amount on your finger or a soft cloth, work it into the leather in small circles, and wipe off the excess. If it's your first time, try it on a small hidden area; the balm can darken the leather slightly at first, which is normal.
Once a month is enough for a piece you carry every day, and every two to three months for pieces you use less. For stains, see What to Try on a Leather Stain.
