The only floral candle in the range, and the widest one. The Hillside Design soy candle holds 15.9 oz (450 g) of paraffin-free soy wax in a low, wide glass vessel, 5.3" across and 2.75" high, and burns for roughly 55 hours on several wooden wicks. Where the rest of the range is sandalwood and woody, this one is floral and fruity.
Paraffin-Free Soy Candle Features
Floral and fruity, not woody
Hillside opens light and fruity, settles into soft floral notes in the middle, and
finishes with a faintly powdery, creamy warmth. It is the spring end of the range. Every other
candle we make is built around sandalwood, so this is the one to pick when you want a room that
smells bright rather than warm.
Wide and low, with several wooden wicks
The vessel is 5.3" (13.5 cm) across and only 2.75" (7 cm) high, which is a
different object from a tall jar: it sits low on a coffee table and lights a wide, shallow pool.
That width is why it carries several wooden wicks instead of one, and why the
scent reaches further than the wax weight alone would suggest. Wooden wicks crackle softly as they
burn.
An illustrated wrap on frosted glass
The glass is frosted and wrapped in a painted scene: a green headland with small white houses and
birds over the water. Lit, the flames sit close to the surface and the whole vessel glows from
above rather than through the sides.
100% soy wax, about 55 hours
The wax is 100% natural soy and the candle is vegan, with no paraffin, which means
no petroleum soot on the wall above it. The full 15.9 oz (450 g) burns for roughly
55 hours.
Candle Size, Scent and Wax
Hillside is the widest candle in the range and, at 2.75" (7 cm), the lowest. It reads as a bowl rather than a jar, which is what makes it a table object as much as a candle. The wax is plain cream against the painted wrap, with the wooden wicks spaced across the surface.

How to Burn It
- On the first burn, leave it lit until the melted wax reaches the edge, roughly 2 to 3 hours. On a candle this wide, a short first burn is what leaves a ring of unused wax around the rim for good
- Trim the wooden wicks to about 1/8" (3 mm) before every burn and snap off the burnt carbon once cool
- Keep it out of a draft. A wide pool is more sensitive to moving air than a narrow one
- Burn no more than about 4 hours at a stretch, and never leave a lit candle unattended
An honest limit: 55 hours is an approximation, and a wide candle punishes careless burning more than a narrow one. Skip the long first burn and you will lose a rim of wax you paid for. Hillside is also the floral one: if you were expecting the woody sandalwood the rest of the range is built on, the Wick and Shoreline candles are that scent at the same size. And a candle is a scent and a mood, not a heater.
How to Pair It
- If you want woody instead: Wick and Shoreline are the same 15.9 oz size in sandalwood, in ceramic and amber glass.
- For a small room: the 7.8 oz Home and Farmhouse tins burn about 40 hours on a single wooden wick.
- On the same table: it sits low, so it works next to a Leather Bowl or a Leather Coaster without blocking anything.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does it smell like?
Floral and fruity. It opens light and softly sweet, moves into delicate floral notes, and finishes with a powdery, creamy warmth. It is the only candle in our range that is not built around sandalwood, so it is the one to choose if woody scents are not what you want at home.
How long does it burn?
Around 55 hours for the full 15.9 oz (450 g), assuming trimmed wicks and no draft. Lit for two hours in the evening, that is most of a month.
Why is it so wide and low?
It is 5.3" (13.5 cm) across and 2.75" (7 cm) high, which makes it a table object rather than a shelf jar. The wide surface also means several wooden wicks and a broad melt pool, so the scent travels further than the wax weight alone would suggest.
How is it different from the Wick and Shoreline candles?
The scent, and the shape. Those two are woody sandalwood in tall vessels; Hillside is floral and fruity in a wide low one. All three hold 15.9 oz and burn about 55 hours, so the choice is only about what you want the room to smell like and what you want on the table.
Why wooden wicks?
A single cotton wick cannot melt a pool 5.3" across; it would burn straight down and waste most of the wax. Several wooden wicks melt the surface evenly, and they crackle quietly while they burn.
What is tunneling and how do I avoid it?
Tunneling is when the flame burns down the middle and leaves a wall of wax around the edge. It is set on the first burn: if the melted pool does not reach the glass before you blow it out, the candle keeps that smaller circle for the rest of its life. On a wide candle like this one, give the first burn a full 2 to 3 hours.
Everything else we make smells like sandalwood; this is the one that smells like spring.
How can I track my order?
When your order ships, we email you a shipping confirmation with your tracking number and a tracking link. You also get an email at every stage until it reaches you. You can check the status any time on our Track My Order page, or under your account if you signed in when you ordered.
These emails go automatically to the email address entered with the order, and we can't stop them for a single order. If you are sending a gift and want to keep the surprise, enter your own email address and phone number at checkout.
When will my order ship, and when will it arrive?
Each piece is prepared after you order: your order is prepared and shipped within 6 business days, then it is usually delivered within 3-5 business days. The dates for your order are shown on the product page before you buy. Weekends and public holidays are not counted.
Orders ship with UPS, FedEx or DHL. We email your tracking number on the day your order ships. A parcel doesn't always leave the carrier's facility right away, so the tracking may take a little while to show movement; please check again later.
How much is shipping?
The shipping cost for your order is shown at checkout before you pay, and most orders ship free. There are no extra shipping charges after you pay.
Do you accept returns and cancellations?
Yes. You have 14 days from delivery to request a return of a piece without personalization; it must come back unused, in its original condition and packaging. Pieces stamped with a name are made for one person, so as stated in our Refund Policy they can't be canceled, returned or exchanged. To start a return or a cancellation, write to us at contact@semender.info or through our contact page.
How do I personalize my order?
On the product page, type the name you want in the "Add the name you want stamped (optional)" box below the color options. Name stamping is free. The limit is 5 to 18 characters depending on the piece, spaces included, and the counter in the box shows each piece's limit.
All letters A to Z, the numbers 0-9, ❤ and the marks ( ) . - & @ / can be stamped; other marks and emoji can't. Logos are stamped only on corporate bulk orders. Names are stamped in capital letters, 6 mm (about 1/4 in) tall. Personalized pieces can't be canceled, returned or exchanged.
For the full details, see our Personalization Guide.
Is your leather real?
Yes. Our leather pieces are made from full-grain calfskin, semi-vegetable tanned. On our waxed canvas models, leather is used together with waxed canvas. The leather darkens and gains character as you use it.
What the labels on leather actually mean is explained in Full-Grain, Top-Grain and Genuine Leather.
My order is a gift. What should I do?
Write your message in the order note on the cart page and we add it to your order. To make the gift extra special, add a wooden gift box from the product page, choose one of our ready-made gift sets, or put several pieces together on Build Your Own Gift Set.
How do I care for leather, and how often?
Leather is a natural material: every piece can carry different tones and marks, it darkens as you use it, and it can scratch in everyday use. These scratches, and marks left by water, can be treated with our Leather Balm.
To use the balm, first wipe the piece with a damp cloth and let it dry completely. Take a small amount on your finger or a soft cloth, work it into the leather in small circles, and wipe off the excess. If it's your first time, try it on a small hidden area; the balm can darken the leather slightly at first, which is normal.
Once a month is enough for a piece you carry every day, and every two to three months for pieces you use less. For stains, see What to Try on a Leather Stain.
